Flooring Inquiry Posted: 2009-07-09 11:25:09 by Dan Cosgrove http://www.brazilianhardwood.com/bd-crm/include/images/deletebutton.gif Dear Mr. Soda, Although you can install your floor right away, we strongly recommend giving your new flooring time to acclimate to its new installation climate. How do you give your new flooring time to acclimate? Before you install your flooring, allow the floor to sit in the room(s) you wish to install it in for one to two weeks so that the floor may have time to adjust in size with the climate in the home. If you install immediately, you may find your floor has gaps, cups, and/or creaks shortly after installation, leaving you permanently dissatisfied with your purchase. Additionally, after you initially bring the wood flooring into your home, we advise you to run the heating system without a humidifier to help remove the excess moisture. You must remember in addition to the hardwood flooring, you will need to remove excess moisture in the plywood sub-floor. This will help your new flooring acclimate to its new environment. After installation, the long term integrity of your new floor requires that you maintain a relative humidity of 37 to 40% in your home. If you live in an area of the country where you use forced hot air heating systems during the winter months, then we suggest using a humidifier. Wood manufacturer warranties do not cover wood shrinkage claims if the home owner does not do their part in keeping the humidity level between 37 to 40%. Maintaining proper moisture levels in your home can slow down or even reverse the shrinkage effects that all wood goes through. With the proper care your new exotic hardwood flooring will maintain its beauty for many years to come. Sincerely, Dan Cosgrove, President Brazilian Direct, Ltd. This takes a summer floor moisture reading from +/-10 % down to +/- 5 %. Shrinkage translates into gapping or opening up lines in the floor. The lighter the floor (oak or maple), the more you see it. Darker floors like Mahogany Santos or Brazilian Cherry are NOT as noticeable (dark line-dark floor) and are a great choice. The key to any successful hardwood flooring application is introducing an alternate source of moisture during the heating season ...
